HINT: IF YOU CHOOSE TO PRINT THIS TUTORIAL, BE SURE TO SET YOUR PRINTING PREFERENCES TO "SHRINK TO FIT"

PART B: CREATING AND PLACING FILES AND FOLDERS.
NOTE: YOUR FOLDER/FILE BEHAVIOR MAY BE DIFFERENT. THE VARYING FACTORS ARE WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE YOUR SYSTEM SET UP FOR DOUBLE CLICKING OR A SINGLE CLICK AND WHETHER YOU HAVE "Use checkboxes to select items" ENABLED ON YOUR VIEWS TAB IN FOLDER OPTIONS. IF YOU ARE SET UP TO SINGLE CLICK, I SUGGEST THAT YOU ENABLE "Use checkboxes to select items", BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED TO PLACE A TICK IN THE BOX ON EACH FILE/FOLDER TO ACCESS THE APPROPRIATE CONTEXT MENU. TRUST ME, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
Section 1: CREATING THE "App Launch" FOLDER.
1. Click on the Start Menu on your Taskbar, navigate to Computer and click.
2. Double click on the "Local Disk (C:)" drive icon to open.
3. Right click on any empty space in the Explorer window, navigate to New>Folder and click.

7. (We will need this folder later in the process. It is VITAL!)
8. Close Explorer.
TEST: NAVIGATE TO YOUR DESKTOP AND VERIFY THAT THE SHORTCUT TO "App Launch" FOLDER IS IN PLACE. (YOU MAY ALSO WISH TO RIGHT CLICK ON THE "App Launch" SHORTCUT, NAVIGATE AND CLICK ON "Properties" AND VERIFY THAT A SHORTCUT TAB IS PRESENT AND ACTIVE.)
Section 2: CREATING AND PLACING THE SHORTCUTS INTO THE "App Launch" FOLDER.
* DO NOT PLACE OR MOVE ORIGINAL PROGRAM AND OR SYSTEM FILES INTO THIS FOLDER - THIS IS TO PROTECT AGAINST ANY DATA LOSS IN CASE YOUR COMPUTER ENCOUNTERS PROBLEMS AS WELL AS PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY OF YOUR SYSTEM'S COMPLICATED STRUCTURE *
APPLICATION SHORTCUTS
(We Are Going To Use "notepad.exe" for the sake of this tutorial. You can choose any application and as many as you like, one at a time.)

8. Text will appear in blue highlight, rename it to "Notepad" and press Enter key. (Since this is only a shortcut, the file extension or the word "Shortcut" is not necessary. A clean interface is the goal.) (Actually you can name it anything you choose as long as the path on the shortcut tab in Properties points to the original file/folder.)

FOLDER SHORTCUTS
(We Are Going To Use "Documents" for the sake of this tutorial. You can choose any folder and as many as you like, one at a time. The steps for this procedure differ from that of Application Shortcuts by having to reorder the way in which we complete them.)

(Actually you can name it anything you choose as long as the path on the shortcut tab in Properties points to the original file/folder.)
15. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
16. Close Explorer.
TEST: NAVIGATE TO YOUR DESKTOP, DOUBLE CLICK THE "App Launch" SHORTCUT TO OPEN, AND VERIFY THAT THE "Documents" SHORTCUT IS IN PLACE. (YOU MAY ALSO WISH TO RIGHT CLICK ON THE "Documents" SHORTCUT, NAVIGATE AND CLICK ON "Properties" AND VERIFY THAT A SHORTCUT TAB IS PRESENT AND ACTIVE. CLICK OK.)
PART C: CREATING AND POSITIONING THE "App Launch" TOOLBAR ON YOUR DESKTOP.
Section 1: PREPARING THE "App Launch" SHORTCUT.
1. On your Desktop, locate and right click on the "App Launch - Shortcut" shortcut.
2. Navigate to Rename and click.
3. Text will appear in blue highlight, type in "App Launch" and press Enter key. (Since this is only a shortcut, the word "Shortcut" is not necessary. A clean interface is the goal.)
4. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
TEST: ON YOUR DESKTOP, RIGHT CLICK ON "App Launch" SHORTCUT, NAVIGATE TO PROPERTIES, AND CLICK. VERIFY THAT THE SHORTCUT TAB IS PRESENT, ACTIVE, AND THE PATH POINTS TO THE ORIGINAL PATH. CLICK OK.
Section 2: TRANSFORMING THE "App Launch" SHORTCUT INTO A TOOLBAR AND POSITIONING IT.
1. On your Desktop, locate and LEFT click on the "App Launch" shortcut., while continuing to hold down the left mouse button, Drag & Drop the shortcut into the upper right hand corner of your desktop.
2. A Toolbar will appear, when it does, release the button on your mouse.
3. You have just created the "App Launch Toolbar".
4. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
Section 3: SETTING UP "App Launch Toolbar" FOR OPTIMAL VIEWING AND EASY ACCESS.
1. On your Desktop, right click on "App Launch Toolbar", navigate to View> and click on Small Icons to enable.
2. Again, right click on "App Launch Toolbar", and deselect both the Show Text and Show Title.
3. Do not select Auto-Hide or Always On Top.
4. Adjust the size of the toolbar by left clicking on your mouse button on the bottom edge of the toolbar, holding it down and dragging it until it has only 1 row showing, then release the mouse button.
5. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
Section 4: TIDYING UP YOUR DESKTOP.
1. Individually, set up your shortcuts on the "App Launch Toolbar" (As Per Instruction In Previous Sections of This Tutorial) to match those that you currently have on your Desktop.
* OMIT THE "Computer", "User's Files", "Network", and "Control Panel" ICONS FROM THIS NEXT STEP IF THEY ARE PRESENT ON YOUR DESKTOP *
2. When you have finished, drag and drop all of your Desktop shortcuts, (yes, even the "App Launch" shortcut - NOT THE "App Launch Toolbar") to the Recycle Bin (DO NOT EMPTY RECYCLE BIN UNTIL COMPLETELY FINISHED AND YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT EVERYTHING IS WORKING AS IT SHOULD). IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF AN ICON IS A SHORTCUT, RIGHT CLICK THE ICON IN QUESTION, NAVIGATE TO AND SELECT "Properties", IF IT IS A SHORTCUT, THERE WILL BE A "Shortcut" TAB AT THE TOP WITH THE TARGET PATH. (IT IS AT YOUR DISCRETION AS TO WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO DELETE IT OR NOT. IF IT IS A FILE THAT CAN BE SAFELY MOVED TO ANOTHER LOCATION OTHER THAN THE DESKTOP, THEN YOU MAY WISH TO CONSIDER MOVING IT.)
3. Now, right click on any empty area of your Desktop, navigate to Personalize and click.
4. In the right pane of the window that you just opened, click on "Change desktop icons".
5. Uncheck the following boxes:
"Computer"
"User's Files"
"Network"
"Control Panel"
6. Keep the checkbox ticked for "Recycle Bin".
7. Click OK.
8. Close the open Window.
* IDEA: I "DRAG & DROP" THE "COMPUTER", "USER'S FILES", "NETWORK", AND "CONTROL PANEL" ICONS FROM THE START MENU ONTO MY QUCIK LAUNCH BAR. THIS CREATES SHORTCUTS - IT DOES NOT MOVE THEM FROM THE START MENU. NOW, THE ONLY ICON THAT I HAVE ON MY DESK IS "RECYCLE BIN". IF YOU USE AUTO-HIDE FOR YOUR QUICK LAUNCH TOOLBAR, YOU MUST TEMPORARILY DESELECT AUTO-HIDE AND YOU SHOULD ALSO DISABLE "LOCK TOOLBAR" SO THAT YOU CAN EXPAND YOUR ICON VIEWING AREA FOR YOUR ICONS - THIS WAY YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCESS HIDDEN ICONS BY AN EXTRA CLICK ON THE CHEVRONS. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, ADJUST THE VIEWING AREA OF THE QUICKLAUNCH BAR AS NEEDED, AND THEN YOU CAN RE-ENABLE AUTO-HIDE AND LOCK TOOLBAR.
9. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
TEST: GO TO YOUR "App Launch Toolbar” AND CLICK ON EACH ICON, ONE AT A TIME, TO VERIFY THAT THEY ARE ALL CORRECTLY CONFIGURED.
PART D: ENHANCING INTERNET EXPLORER AND ONLINE TASKS WITH THE "App Launch Toolbar".
NOTE: YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE SAME RESULTS IN THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS WITH OTHER BROWSERS; HOWEVER, I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THEM AND AM NOT QUALIFIED TO INSTRUCT YOU ON THEM.
NOTE: I CAN ONLY VERIFY THAT THE FOLLOWING STEPS WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER 7. THEY MAY ALSO POSSIBLY WORK WITH VERSIONS 5 AND UP, HOWEVER, I DON'T KNOW.
Section 1: CUSTOMIZING THE SIZE OF THE INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER WINDOW TO BLEND IN WITH "App Launch Toolbar".
1. Open Internet Explorer. If it is Maximized, then Restore it to smaller size. Do not minimize.
2. Your "App Launch Toolbar" should now be visible.
3. Manually, by dragging the sides of Internet Explorer Window with your mouse's left button held down, stretch to cover the entire Desktop, but not the "App Launch Toolbar" or the Taskbar at the bottom of your Desktop, then release the mouse button.
4. Now, hold down your "Ctrl" key on your keyboard, navigate to File>Exit on your Menu Bar in Internet Explorer and click on Exit.
5. Release your "Ctrl" key.
6. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
TEST: OPEN INTERNET EXPLORER AND VERIFY THAT IT OPENS AT THE NEW CUSTOMIZED SIZE. THIS WILL BE YOUR DEFAULT BROWSER SIZE UNLESS YOU CHANGE IT.
Section 2: MAKING A SHORTCUT TO A SHORTCUT: ENABLES CREATING NEW FILES (DOCUMENTS, PICTURES, ETC.) IN THE "App Launch Toolbar" FOR EASY ACCESS.
NOTE: THIS HAS TO BE A SHORTCUT; YOU CANNOT JUST CREATE ANOTHER SAME NAMED FOLDER. IT WOULD BREAK DOWN THE WHOLE STRUCTURE OF WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH.
1. On Start Menu, navigate to "Computer" and click.
2. Double click "Local Disk (C:)"
3. Right click on "App Launch", navigate to Create Shortcut and click.
4. Right click on "App Launch - Shortcut", navigate to "Move To Folder..." and click.
5. In the Directory Tree prompt, navigate to Computer>Local Disk (C:)>App Launch. (HINT: It is most likely already selected for you.)
6. Click on the "App Launch" folder and click the MOVE button.
7. Do not close Explorer yet.
8. Now double click on the original "App Launch" folder to open.
9. You should now see "App Launch - Shortcut".
10. Right click "App Launch - Shortcut", navigate to "Rename" and click.
11. Text will appear in blue highlight, rename it to "Add to App Launch" and press Enter key. (Since this is only a shortcut, the word "Shortcut" is not necessary. A clean interface is the goal.)
12. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
13. Close Explorer.
TEST: ON "App Launch Toolbar" ON YOUR DESKTOP, HOVER YOUR CURSOR OVER THE ICON (SHOULD BE A DEFAULT FOLDER ICON) AND CLICK THE ONE FOR "Add to App Launch". (THE TOOLTIPS THAT POP-UP WHEN YOU HOVER YOUR CURSOR OVER THE ICONS WILL REVEAL THE NAME OF THE SHORTCUT THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO LOCATE.). THE "App Launch" WINDOW SHOULD OPEN WITH ALL SHORTCUTS IN TACT AS WELL AS THE "Add to App Launch" SHORTCUT.
Section 3: CREATING NEW FILES ON THE FLY - NOTE TAKING AND HTML EDITING
1. On "App Launch Toolbar", locate and click on "Add to App Launch".
2. The "Add to App Launch" Window should now be open.
3. Right click anywhere on an empty space in the Window, navigate to New>Rich Text Format and click.
4. When the blue highlighted text appears, name the file "mynotes.rft". (You can name your files anything you want, the file name here is chosen for tutorial purposes.)
5. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
6. Close Window. (AKA Explorer)
TEST: ON YOUR DESKTOP ON "App Launch Toolbar", LOCATE THE FILE THAT YOU JUST CREATED AND CLICK ON IT TO VERIFY THAT IT IS PRESENT AND ACCESSIBLE.
Section 4: PLACING WWW SHORTCUTS IN "App Launch Toolbar".
1. Open Internet Explorer, you will be at your homepage.
2. You should still see your "App Launch Toolbar" sitting on top or your Internet Explorer Window.
3. Locate the little HTML icon with a little E in it, in the address bar.
4. LEFT click on that icon, holding the mouse button, drag and drop that icon into the "App Launch Toolbar".
5. Release the mouse button.
6. Review and ensure that you followed these steps exactly and accomplished them accurately.
7. Leave Internet Explorer open for testing purposes.
(NOTE: REMEMBER THAT THIS IS GEARED TO INTERNET EXPLORER 7 WHICH MAKES USE OF TABS.)
NOTE: DEPENDING ON YOUR SYSTEM SECURITY SETTINGS, YOUR WWW SHORTCUTS MAY STILL OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW. THIS IS DUE TO USER ACCOUNT CONTROL BEING ENABLED.
TEST: IN INTERNET EXPLORER 7, OPEN A NEW TAB. NOW, CLOSE THE INITIAL (HOMEPAGE) TAB. NAVIGATE TO THE WWW SHORTCUT THAT YOU JUST CREATED ON YOUR "App Launch Toolbar". CLICK ON IT AND VERIFY THAT A NEW TAB OPENS UP TO THAT WWW SHORTCUT.
THOUGHT: I RESERVE THE PREVIOUS ACTIONS FOR MY "CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT WWW SHORTCUTS (OTHERWISE KNOWS AS FAVORITES OR BOOKMARKS). IT IS MUCH FASTER THAN HAVING TO CALL UP AND NAVIGATE MY FAVORITES.
POINTERS AND TIPS
1. You can right click and delete any item on your "App Launch Toolbar".
2. You can drag icons around on your "App Launch Toolbar". (Perhaps you would like to group similar shortcuts.)
3. You can drag and drop your "App Launch Toolbar" to the sides of your Desktop as well, but remember to reset your browser's default size and orientation to accommodate full view of the "App Launch Toolbar".
4. When you are searching for particular subjects on the internet, and want to take small notes from each or some of them, you can open "Add to App Launch” from your "App Launch Toolbar", create a new Text Document or Rich Text Format document, and it will be immediately accessible without having to open Windows Explorer or Documents and search for it. With this method, just one click and your there!
5. I have IE7 Pro (http://www.ie7pro.com) installed as an Add-On to Internet Explorer. It is a great freeware file.
6. I also have disabled most of my Bars in Internet Explorer. The only ones that I use are the Address Bar, the Search Bar, and a very shortened version of the Command Bar (Only the Home Button shows.) This tip allows for a much bigger viewing area in Internet Explorer - Less Clutter, More Webpage without so much scrolling.
I HAVE INCLUDED A SCREENSHOT OF MY DESKTOP AND INTERNET EXPLORER SO YOU CAN SEE MY RESULTS. I DO USE THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR, I HAVE IT SET ON AUTO-HIDE.
